Fanback Windsor Chairs
T he distinguishing
features of the fanback Windsor chair are its ornately shaped
stiles, the two main uprights which form the back, and its highly refined
"shovel" seat. The stiles angle outward on most examples, as do the spindles,
forming a fan-like appearance.
The back is crowned with a steam bent crest, the ends
of which are carved in a spiral pattern known as a volute. Our fan back
side chair works well with any combination of our Windsor chairs but is
most practical with the Nantucket fan back.
